Dr. Hemström is a senior scientist at the Division for CBRN Defence and Security at the Swedish Defence Research Agency, FOI. Dr. Hemström has a PhD in analytical chemistry from Umeå University (with secondment at UC Berkeley) focusing on stationary phase development for Hydrophilic Interaction Chromatography (HILIC). During his PhD and later while working for HILIC pioneering start-up SeQuant AB he is an established proponent of HILIC by co-authoring a very extensively sited review article in 2006.
After joining FOI in 2014 Dr. Hemström has worked on numerous projects but the main focus has been on High Resolution Mass Spectrometry-Liquid Chromatography for verification analysis of chemical warfare agents, related chemicals and their biomarkers. A recent interest is lipid analysis, much of his effort has been focused on implementation of nano-LC/HRMS and “lipidomic” work-flows for finding biomarkers of chlorine gas exposure, an area that has experienced large attention in the scientific area due to the ongoing conflict in Syria.
